I’m Matthew Hodges.
Block Road Press is a fine art monochrome photography archive and print studio documenting my lifelong journey with Table Mountain.
A COMPANION for life
When I was 7, my school took us to the top of Table Mountain. For the first time in my life, I felt at home.
Over the next 40 years, the mountain became my refuge, teacher, and ever-present companion. I explored it obsessively; hiking, running, biking and rock climbing. It was the ultimate backyard.
To me, the mountain was alive. It had a presence that offered sanctuary and wisdom, but commanded fear and respect. I was never truly alone up there, even when no one else was around.
A STORY IN BLACK AND WHITE
Growing up, I was captivated by old mountaineering books and the haunting, monochrome photos of early 1900s climbers on vertical rock faces. These images reflected the darkness, mysticism and quiet power I felt on the slopes.
Today my work is rooted in that feeling and the unrefined aesthetic of early landscape photography.
I created Block Road Press to express my lifelong connection to Table Mountain and my love for mountain photography.
FROM ARCHIVE TO PRINT
My photos are brought to life with fine art Giclée archival inks on museum-grade Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308gsm paper in two sizes.
Option 1: Medium Prints
Printed at 240 × 360 mm with a uniform 90 mm unprinted border on a 420 × 540 mm archival sheet (almost A2 in size). Limited to 30 signed and numbered fine art prints.
Option 2: Large Prints
Printed at 360 × 540 mm centered on a 420 × 594 mm (A2) archival sheet. Limited to 15 signed and numbered fine art prints.
A Certificate of Authenticity ensures each piece is crafted as an exclusive artifact to capture the spirit of the old mountain for lifetimes to come.
